For a night where upsets loomed large over the Wankhede Stadium, Indian captain Suryakumar Yadav's unbeaten 84 helped India avoid disaster against the associate nation USA. On the opening day of the T20 World Cup 2026, where all the associated nations nearly pulled off a miracle, India successfully defended their lowest-ever T20I total at Mumbai as they overcame a spirited Bangladesh by 29 runs.
The Associate ambush
While all the chatter before the match by the broadcasters was centred on India potentially breaching the 300 mark against a weaker opposition like the USA, the reality hit hard. On a tacky, gripping surface, Indian batters, especially the top order, couldn't adapt to the conditions.
The USA's disciplined bowling lineup, led by Shadley van Schalkwyk, who returned with four wickets by giving away only 25 runs, exploited the early moisture on the pitch with perfection.
The Shockers started early as World No.1 T20I batsman Abhishek Sharma went back to the dressing room for a golden duck. By the end of our play, India was struggling at 46/4.
Van Schalkwyk's double wicket over, removing Ishan Kishan and Shivam Dube, left the entire home crowd in silence, and when the middle order crumbled further against the spin of Mohammad Mohsin and former Mumbai local Harmeet Singh, India really looked desperate to save their reputation at 77/6.
The "Sky" show
However, it was one man who stood between the USA and the greatest upset in T20 World Cup history. Suryakumar Yadav, playing on his home turf in Mumbai, first survived a sharp return catch to Shubham Ranjane when he was just on 17. He then changed his gear, scoring just 48 runs off the final 18 balls he faced.
Surya manipulated the field with his audacity, often finishing his shots flat on his back. The final over for the USA was a massacre as Sourav Mitravalkar conceded 21 runs to finish off the unwanted record of the most expensive figures in T20 World Cup history, where he finished with 65 runs without taking a wicket. Suryakumar's unbeaten 84 off 49 deliveries helped India to a competitive 161 for 9 when 120 was looking far away for India.
Siraj’s redemption arc
India's defence was led by a man who wasn't even meant to be in the squad. Hyderabad Peswar Mohammad Siraj, a last- minute replacement for the injured Harshit Rana, and playing only due to the experienced Jasprit Bumrah's sudden illness, proved his value immediately in his first over.
Siraj dismissed the dangerous Andries Gous in his first over, while Arshdeep Singh (2/18) suffocated the USA openers with a tight over. The USA's top-order struggled to adjust to the lack of pace and couldn't time their pull shots against the Indian Pacers.
Spinners close the door
However, despite the early wickets, the visitors remained in the hunt for a memorable win through Sanjay Krishnamurthy and Subham Ranjane, both of whom scored 37. At one stage, with 62 needed off 5 overs, somehow, they had some hopes of a miracle inside the corner of their hearts, but the lack of dew allowed the Indian spinners to take control.
Axar Patel broke the resistance with two wickets in two balls and was on a hat-trick, then it was Varun Chakravarthy’s mystery that proved to be unsolvable under the light for the USA side. The USA eventually finished on 132/8, falling 29 runs short, butthey earned our immense respect to push the defending champions into the corner.
