In a hard-fought Durand Cup 2025 semi-final match in Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, Polo Ground, NorthEast United FC beat Shillong Lajong FC 1-0 in a tightly fought game to reach the final.
The game was highly tactical, neither able to craft unmistakable chances in the first half. Shillong Lajong used good defensive discipline and tried to disrupt NorthEast United's rhythm while attacking. But Highlanders' temperament and finishing accuracy ultimately proved to be the game changer on the night.
The turning and sole moment came in the 36th minute when Redeem Tlang broke the deadlock. Dramatically stretching a lightning fast counter attack, Tlang created space on the byline before firing a acutely angled shot past the Shillong Lajong goalkeeper to lead NorthEast United. The goal allowed the Highlanders a change in gear with a view of protecting their slender lead.
The second half saw Shillong Lajong trying last ditch efforts for the equalizer, but NorthEast United's defensive organisation proved to be too much for Lajong. The Highlanders' goalkeeper produced a succession of vital saves to snuff out Shillong's attacks, and their midfielders were able to control, snuffing out every sustained attack.
Apart from Tlang's goal that won the match for them, NorthEast United's threat from the attack department was spearheaded by free-scoring Alaaeddine Ajaraie. Shillong Lajong's well-disciplined defense, however, effectively kept Ajaraie at bay for most part of the game, denying him scoring chances. Sana and Buam, who have been Shillong Lajong's star performers in the tournament, were fairly subdued in this semi-final encounter as well.
Despite Shillong Lajong's valiant fight up to the final whistle, NorthEast United FC were able to maintain the narrow advantage, thoroughly deserving of their spot in the Durand Cup final. This victory marks the second time NorthEast United have defeated Shillong Lajong in this edition of the Durand Cup, highlighting a growing dominance over their regional rivals. Their organized game displays their resolve to defend their title and dominate the top-level competition.
The Highlanders now wait for their final rival in anticipation of a clash with either East Bengal FC or Diamond Harbour FC, as the two face each other in the second semi-final.
