India’s pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah delivered a lion-hearted performance on Day 3 of the first Test against England at Headingley, finishing with figures of 5 for 83. His five-wicket haul helped bowl out England for 465 runs, giving India a narrow 6-run lead in the first innings.

This was Bumrah’s 10th five-wicket haul in SENA countries (South Africa, England, New Zealand, Australia), and his 12th away from home, equaling the legendary Kapil Dev. Remarkably, Bumrah achieved this feat in just 34 away Tests, compared to Kapil’s 66.

During England’s innings, Bumrah dismissed Zak Crawley, Ben Duckett, Joe Root, Chris Woakes, and Josh Tongue. His consistent pressure and sharp bowling stood out, even though India were sloppy in the field.

While Bumrah was on fire with the ball, India’s fielding left much to be desired. Yashasvi Jaiswal dropped three catches, and Ravindra Jadeja missed one — all off Bumrah’s bowling. Harry Brook, who eventually scored a damaging 99, was dropped twice on 46 and 82. These missed chances allowed England to get much closer to India’s total than they should have.

At the start of the second session, England were 327 for 5. Harry Brook (99), Jamie Smith (40), Chris Woakes (38), and Brydon Carse (22) added vital runs as England fought back. Despite these efforts, India’s bowlers, especially Prasidh Krishna (3 for 128) and Bumrah, did enough to end the innings with a slim lead.

Earlier, England’s innings was powered by Ollie Pope’s 106 and Ben Duckett’s 62, both of whom played attacking cricket to keep the pressure on India.

After the day’s play, Sachin Tendulkar praised Jasprit Bumrah’s five-wicket haul, calling it a lion-hearted effort. However, he also pointed out that had India taken all their catches, England’s total could have been significantly lower.

As the Test match heads into Day 4, India will hope for a better show in the field and continued brilliance from their bowlers.
