The All India Football Federation (AIFF) has moved forward with its selection process for appointing the next head coach of the Indian men’s national football team by finalizing a three-man shortlist. This decision comes after the departure of Manolo Marquez and follows a meticulous selection process that filtered 170 applicants down to three distinct profiles. The AIFF’s technical committee—featuring names like Subrata Paul and Syed Sabir Pasha—has sought to strike a balance between local experience, proven international pedigree, and fresh global perspectives.
The final shortlist features Indian stalwart Khalid Jamil, the experienced Stephen Constantine, and Slovakia’s Štefan Tarkovič. Each coach brings a contrasting yet compelling philosophy to the table. Jamil represents homegrown excellence and tactical grit. Constantine, a familiar figure in Indian football, carries the legacy of transformation and stability. Tarkovič, the lesser-known but equally intriguing name, offers national team expertise across confederations. The AIFF now faces a defining decision: whether to double down on domestic continuity or open a new chapter with an imported vision.
Khalid Jamil (India)
Khalid Jamil is the heartbeat of Indian club coaching. After scripting a fairytale I-League title win with Aizawl FC in 2017, he cemented his reputation by taking both NorthEast United FC and Jamshedpur FC to the ISL playoffs. Known for instilling confidence and tactical discipline, Jamil is admired for extracting the best out of under-resourced squads. He received AIFF Men’s Coach of the Year twice(2023–24 and 2024–25).
Stephen Constantine (England)
Stephen Constantine is no stranger to Indian football fans. His two previous stints (2002–05 and 2015–19) brought silverware, system-building, and a surge in India’s FIFA rankings. Known for his pragmatic, fitness-first approach and for giving youth a chance, Constantine left a clear legacy—most notably taking India to a 14-match unbeaten run and a ranking high of 96. Now back in contention, his familiarity with India’s footballing ecosystem may offer stability and structure at a crucial time.
Štefan Tarkovič (Slovakia)
A surprise inclusion for many, Štefan Tarkovič is a national team specialist. Having managed Slovakia's U18 and senior sides, and currently leading Kyrgyzstan, his strength lies in international football's tactical rhythms—short camps, cross-cultural squads, and tournament strategies. While less is publicly known about his footballing philosophy, his presence in the shortlist suggests AIFF's openness to a fresh voice and a global method of operating. Tarkovič represents the wildcard—an outsider who could bring an entirely new blueprint to Indian football.
