India men’s football captain and all-time top scorer Sunil Chhetri has described the ongoing uncertainty in Indian football as “very concerning,” while urging players, staff, and everyone in the ecosystem to stay united and hopeful.

In a heartfelt message posted on social media, Chhetri reflected on the personal and collective anxiety caused by the delay of the upcoming 2025–26 Indian Super League (ISL) season. What began as a two-week delay has now turned indefinite, after Football Sports Development Limited (FSDL) failed to reach a final agreement with the All India Football Federation (AIFF) regarding the upcoming season.

“The current situation that Indian football finds itself in, is very concerning,” Chhetri wrote. “I’ve received a flurry of texts from players, staff members, physios, masseurs – not just from my club, but from other clubs as well. Everybody in the Indian football ecosystem is worried, hurt, scared about the uncertainty we are faced with.”

The ISL, India’s premier men’s football competition, has yet to announce its official start date for the 2025–26 season. The impasse has left players, coaches, support staff, and operational crews across the country in limbo — with no clarity on contracts, training schedules, or competitive timelines.

Chhetri, who has played a pivotal role in both Bengaluru FC and Indian football's modern resurgence, acknowledged the mental toll the delay has taken but remained optimistic that a resolution will be found.

“I know that the think tank and all those involved in running the sport are working to get the football season up and running, and I’m hopeful that there is a solid fix sooner rather than later,” he added.

The veteran forward, who has witnessed Indian football evolve through I-League, ISL, and now this transition phase, focused his message on those whose livelihoods are most affected by the standstill — from players and coaches to masseurs, kit staff, and production crews.

“I may not have all the answers,” he admitted, “but my message to all those involved with Indian football — and more importantly the ones whose livelihood depends on it — is: please stay calm. We’ll ride this storm together. Stick together and look out for each other. Keep training and getting better. Football has to resume soon. It will.”

The statement, widely shared across football forums, comes at a time when fans and professionals alike are seeking clarity and direction. While the AIFF and FSDL continue their behind-the-scenes negotiations, Chhetri’s message has struck a chord — reminding the country that Indian football’s strength lies in its community.
