Belgium claimed their first-ever Sultan Azlan Shah Cup title with a narrow 1-0 victory over India in the final held in Malaysia. The decisive moment came in the 34' when Thibeau Stockbroekx scored the only goal of the match.
This was Belgium’s second appearance in the prestigious invitational tournament, and they made it count by defeating India for the second time in the competition. Earlier in the group stage, Belgium had edged past India 3-2.
India, who had entered the final after a dominant 14-3 win over Canada, could not convert any of the three penalty corners they earned. Jugraj Singh, Amit Rohidas, and Sanjay, who had been effective in penalty corner situations throughout the tournament, were unable to find a way past the solid Belgian defence.
The final turned out to be a tight contest marked by strong defensive play and midfield battles. With senior players like Manpreet Singh and Hardik Singh rested, India’s young side put up a commendable fight against a well-drilled Belgian team.
The first half ended without goals but featured plenty of action. Belgium began stronger, keeping more possession and creating early pressure with two penalty corners, both of which India defended well. The Indian team gradually found rhythm but struggled to connect in the final third.
Belgium began the second half with greater control and soon took the lead through Stockbroekx’s strike in the 34'. India pushed hard for an equaliser in the final quarter, increasing their circle entries and attacking intensity, but Belgium’s disciplined structure ensured they held firm until the final whistle.
India had to settle for the silver medal, while Belgium celebrated their maiden title win in the Sultan Azlan Shah Cup.
