Eighteen year old Sheetal Devi created history on Saturday by becoming the first woman armless archer to win a world championship gold medal. She defeated Turkey's world No.1 Oznur Cure Girdi 146-143 in a thrilling final at the Para World Archery Championships 2025 in Gwangju, South Korea.
Sheetal Devi's victory was particularly sweet as it avenged her narrow 140-138 defeat against the Turk at the 2023 Pilsen World Championships. The young archer, who shoots using her feet and chin due to being born with phocomelia, a rare congenital condition that left her without arms, displayed exceptional composure throughout the final to craft her way in history.
The final showcased Devi's technical brilliance and mental strength. After the opening end was tied at 29-29, she took control by firing three perfect 10s in the second end to take it 30-27. Though the third end was evenly matched and she lost the fourth narrowly, Devi maintained a crucial two point lead at 116-114. She saved her best for last, delivering a perfect final end with three perfect arrows to secure the gold. Earlier in the semifinals, Sheetal Devi had defeated aside Great Britain's Jodie Grinham 145-140 to reach the final.
This gold medal capped off a memorable campaign for Devi, who finished with three medals at the championships. She had earlier partnered with Toman Kumar to win bronze in the mixed team compound event, defeating Great Britain 152-149. She and Sarita claimed silver in the compound women's open team final, though they fell short against Turkey 148-152.
Devi's unique shooting technique involves using a specialized strap around her chest with a release aid positioned over her right shoulder. She picks arrows with her right foot, raises the bow with her leg, and releases using jaw movement and shoulder strength. She is also has a Paralympic bronze medal in Paris 2024.
This historic victory not only demonstrates Devi's exceptional talent but also serves as an inspiration for para athletes worldwide, proving that determination and skill can overcome any physical challenges and obstacles.
