In a top of the table clash East Bengal was hosting the Eastern Neighbors Jamshedpur FC for a vital clash on Friday evening at Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan. Both Oscar Bruzon and Owen Coyle went in with their tried and tested set up of 4-4-2. However, the arrival of the new Danish striker Anton Sojberg and his immediate induction in the starting 11 made everyone anticipate something new.
The match began with East Bengal trying to inject pace down both the wings. Edmund Lalrindija gained an early freekick in the 3rd minute. Sanan was shown the yellow card for his cynical challenge on Edmund. Miguel's well measured ball found Jay Gupta who could not keep the ball on target.
Jamshedpur earned their first corner in the 5th minute of the match that was largely wasteful.
In the first 10 minutes East Bengal controlled the midfield. But Jamshedpur also orchestrated a couple of quick transitions that looked ominous. From a similar move Mark Zo found Messi Bouli in the middle of two defenders who finished calmly. But the offside flag saved East Bengal.
East Bengal earned their first corner in the 10th minute of the match. But nothing fruitful came of it.
Nikola Stokanovic was already creating a few problems for the red and gold defence. Vincy Barreto also kept creating a lot of space down the wing. Barreto forced a save off Gill on the 14th minute mark. East Bengal on the other hand struggled to show the same midfield fluency shown in the first 2 matches and the combination between Vipin Edmund and Miguel.
Ok the 17th minute mark Jamshedpur gained a freekick at the edge of the box. Nunga was shown a yellow card for his mistimed tackle on Sanan. Madih Talal forced a good save from Gill again to keep the scoreline goalless.
In an end to end to and from, East Bengal kept trying to create the opening in the counter with Miguel being the fulcrum of the attack. But the Jamshedpur defense kept standing tall to all of it under the leadership of Stephen Eze.
The 24th minute of the game saw the first change of the match. Oscar refused to take any chance after the early yellow card for Nunga and brought on Mohammed Rakip to replace him.
The game slowed down a little after the flurry of the first 25 minutes and the teams went into the drinks break around the 32 minute mark goalless.
A dramatic moment unfolded on the 39 minute mark when a Rakip cross was headed in to the hand of Pratik. But the penalty shout was denied by the referee.
The resultant throw in was taken by Bipin who player a one two with Miguel before putting in a cross. Pratik Chowdhury missed the flight and flicked the ball on to the foot of Edmund who went around Mark Zo to slot in a calm finish. Ok the 40th minute mark East Bengal had broken the deadlock and took the 1-0 lead. Edmund has now scored in two consecutive matches.
With renewed zeal, the torchbearers created two more chances in the next 4 minutes. First Miguel forced a strong save from Albino. Then Ezzejjari missed his header from point blank range from the ensuing corner.
With the half time whistle, Oscar will feel much better going into the dressing room. But Owen will also remind his team of the positives and ask them to continue much of the same in the second half.
Bu to sum up the first half, East Bengal were saved twice by their offside line discipline. Jamshedpur stood strong as well in the back but a defensive lapse from Pratik Choudhury resulted in the goal for Edmund.
The second half started on a balanced note. But on the 48th minute, the first opening was created with a brilliant through ball from Miguel again. The ball found Bipin who tried to put in a grounded cross for Ezzejjari. But Eze put in a good block to prevent the goal. It was good play all around.
Jamshedpur created the first Good chance of the half through a setpiece on the 55th minute. Nikola put a freekick in the six yard box. A rising Eze forced a scrambling save from Gill. The ball had little pace. But it was going into the far corner. The match was still hanging on a thread with a slender one goal lead.
Jamshedpur thought they had broken the deadlock on the 60th minute when Messi Bouli made Madih Talal completely open. But Full made a world class save to prevent the score.
But the ensuing corner resulted in the opening goal for Jamshedpur. A well placed corner from Nikola found Eze unmarked in the box. Gill has no chance as he saw the ball hit the back of the net unchallenged..with 61 minutes gone, East Bengal's lead was wiped off and the match stood poised at 1-1.
East Bengal regained some composure to mount another attack in the 67th minute through a long ball from Rakip that Ezzejjari brought down in a gutsy manner to force a save from Albino. From the ensuing corner Jay Gupta forced another good save from Albino.
This was followed by a triple substitution in the 70th minute from Oscar Bruzon who brought on Nandha, Vishnu and Souvik to replace Edmund, Bipin and Anton. East Bengal was looking to unleash the pace and trickery of Vishnu on the left wing.
Unable to create too many good chances, Oscar decided to put in his final throw of the dice by bringing on David to replace Yousef on the 83rd minute of the game. Jamshedpur was maintaining defensive composure. They looked happy with a draw. But were also looking to capitalise on any good opportunities on the counter to seal all the 3 points.
Miguel recieved a yellow card in the 85th minute for showing dissent after a tackle from Pronoy Halder. Pronoy would take this as his success in keeping the Brazilian out of the game in crucial moments.
Tachikawa, who was brought on by Owen Coyle finally had his say in the 88th minute of the match. A move that was started by Sanan brought Tachikawa into the game who played a precise wall with Talal to slot an in stepper into the top corner. A world class finish that looked to all but seal the 3 points for Jamshedpur.
Jamshedpur made a change in the 2nd minute of the 7 minutes of added time to bring in Ritwik Kumar to replace Sanan probably to waste some time.
Following this, East Bengal created a couple of crucial chances through Vishnu. But none of them became fruitful. The final whistle brought closure to a fiercely fought clash and the visitors coming out on top silencing the 23000 strong crowd.
