The India U17 women's football team achieved a historic milestone on October 17, 2025, becoming the first batch to qualify for the AFC U17 Women's Asian Cup through the merit route after defeating Uzbekistan 2-1 in Bishkek, Kyrgyz Republic. This qualification ends a 21 year wait since India last participated in the continental tournament in 2005, when 11 teams participated directly without qualifiers.
Facing a must win situation after falling behind, India demonstrated remarkable resilience at the Dolen Omurzakov Stadium. Head coach Joakim Alexandersson's tactical adjustments proved decisive when he introduced substitute Thandamoni Baskey for Bonifilia Shullai in the 40'. Although India needed only a draw to secure qualification, Uzbekistan dominated the opening stages and took the lead through Shakhzoda Alikhonova's volley in the 38'.
The second half belonged entirely to India as Alexandersson's half time instructions took effect. Baskey equalised in the 55' after dispossessing defender Mariya Dakhova inside the box and slotting home at the near post. The substitute then turned provider 11 minutes later, exchanging passes with Anushka Kumari before the latter calmly finished past the goalkeeper to give India a 2-1 lead. India's defence, led by captain Julan Nongmaithem and Elizabed Lakra, withstood late Uzbekistan pressure to preserve the advantage.
With this victory, India finished top of Group G with six points from two matches, securing qualification for the AFC U17 Women's Asian Cup China 2026. The achievement marks a significant moment for Indian women's football, as the country now boasts qualified teams across all age categories, including the senior team and U20 squad. Alexandersson, who previously guided the U20 team to their first AFC Asian Cup qualification in 20 years earlier in 2025, has now delivered back to back historic achievements for Indian women's football.
Captain Julan Nongmaithem had earlier set the tone with a match winning volley in stoppage time against Kyrgyz Republic in India's opening qualifier on October 14. The 14 year old dedicated both performances to her late father, stating emotionally that she knows he is watching from heaven. With qualification secured, the Young Tigresses will now prepare for next year's continental finals, hoping to make their mark on the Asian stage.
