East Bengal FC secured their semi final qualification hopes with a devastating 4-0 victory over Chennaiyin FC in Group A of the AIFF Super Cup 2025-26 at the GMC Stadium in Bambolim on Tuesday, October 28. The result also confirmed Chennaiyin's elimination from the tournament following back to back defeats at the hands of the Kolkata Clubs.
Chennaiyin started brightly, pressing high and testing East Bengal's defence early. Farukh Choudhary came close to breaking the deadlock when he danced past three defenders and forced a sharp save from Prabhsukhan Singh Gill at the near post. East Bengal appeared unsettled under the pressure but seized their moment against the run of play in the 35'. Naorem Mahesh Singh delivered a teasing free kick from the left that found Kevin Sibille, who rose above the Chennaiyin defence to nod the ball home. The breakthrough sparked East Bengal's attacking momentum. Minutes later, Mahesh crossed low from the right flank, and Bipin Singh timed his run perfectly to guide the ball past goalkeeper Nawaz with precision. East Bengal added a third goal in first half stoppage time when Bipin was played through on the left. He opened his body and curled a clinical finish into the far corner. The goalkeeper got fingertips on the shot but could not prevent it from crossing the line. The transformation was remarkable as East Bengal entered halftime with a commanding 3-0 lead after a difficult opening quarter.
Chennaiyin attempted a comeback in the second half through spells of possession but lacked the cutting edge to trouble East Bengal's backline. The Red and Golds controlled the tempo, absorbed the pressure, and waited patiently for counter-attacking opportunities. Hiroshi Ibusuki made an immediate impact, nearly scoring a sensational goal in the 85' when his long range shot struck the crossbar. The Japanese striker would not be denied for long. In stoppage time, Mandar Rao Dessai brought down Edmund Lalrindika inside the box. Ibusuki stepped up and calmly converted the penalty into the bottom corner to seal the 4-0 rout.
With this emphatic victory, East Bengal moved within touching distance of the semi finals, while Chennaiyin's tournament campaign came to an end.
