Moroccan marksman Alaaeddine Ajaraie returned with a bang, netting a sensational hat-trick to guide NorthEast United FC to a dominant 3-1 victory over Malaysian Armed Forces FT in their Group E opener of the 134th IndianOil Durand Cup. The Highlanders, defending their crown, showcased early intent with a slick attacking display at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in front of over 7,500 fans — including club owner John Abraham.

Debutant Andres Rodriguez set the tone with a delightful assist for Ajaraie’s opener in the 23rd minute. The striker doubled his tally six minutes later after a flowing move involving Jithin M.S., who dazzled on the wing. NEUFC went into the break 2-0 up, having dominated large spells of the first half.

Though the visitors pressed harder in the second period, Ajaraie completed his hat-trick in the 70th minute with a classy solo effort — receiving a diagonal from Bekey Oram, beating defenders, and curling a left-footed beauty into the bottom corner.

Despite a late goal from Muhammad Amir Faisal in the 88th minute, ATM FA couldn’t mount a comeback, and NEUFC sealed a confident win to start their campaign on the right note. Spanish forward Jairo Samperio also came close to adding a fourth, rattling the crossbar with a thunderous strike.

It was a comprehensive outing for Juan Pedro Benali’s men, who now top Group E and look well poised in their title defence.
